Sugar Land City Council recently approved $359,451 for a drainage study and design services for Covington Woods drainage improvements.
The project is intended to decrease street flooding in the Covington West and Imperial Woods neighborhoods. The work will identify improvements and builds on past drainage projects in Covington Woods.
The work is the final drainage project included in four general obligation bond propositions totaling $90.76 million decisively approved by Sugar Land voters on Nov. 5, 2019. The projects covering drainage, facilities, mobility and safety included in the propositions were selected based on extensive planning through various master plans, City Council input and the results of citizen satisfaction surveys that indicated drainage, public safety and traffic/mobility are the top three priorities for residents.
More than $47 million was approved for drainage improvements, including the Covington Woods project that will result in the design and construction of approximately 2,600 linear feet of storm sewer improvements with pavement replacement along the installation corridor. The proposed storm sewer will interconnect the existing Covington West storm sewer system to that of the existing proposed Imperial Woods storm sewer system. The schedule to complete the study and design is nine months from notice to proceed.
“Drainage improvements continue to be identified as a top priority by our community,” said City Engineer Jessie Li. “Our residents have been clear on the continued need to invest in drainage projects to keep our city safe. We listened, worked hard to respond to our residents and delivered on our promise from the 2019 Go Bond election.”
