From the City of Sugar Land:
Sugar Land City Council canvassed the results of the Nov. 5 bond election at a recent special meeting.
Sugar Land voters approved five general obligation bond propositions totaling $350 million. The approved $350 million equates to approximately $300 million in project costs in 2024 dollars.
The five approved propositions include:
- $144.5 million for public safety projects including phase three of the public safety training facility that enables the Police and Fire-EMS Departments to conduct critical trainings within city limits.
- $118 million for major street reconstruction projects, sidewalk rehabilitation and modernization of the city’s mobility network.
- $35 million for drainage projects that focus on stormwater management systems, flood control measures, and drainage infrastructure.
- $40.5 million for the rehabilitation and modernization of existing city facilities and the construction of a new field maintenance facility.
- $12 million in supplemental funds for the design and construction of a new animal shelter that meets industry standards and increased anticipated animal intake numbers from the city’s growth.
The projects included in the propositions were identified through years of public feedback including the most recent Citizen Satisfaction Survey, sentiment surveys and community meetings – as well as various master plans and City Council input.
“We appreciate the broad support of our residents in passing all of the bond propositions,” said Sugar Land Mayor Joe R. Zimmerman. “By making their voices heard at the polls, it reinforces what our community, staff and City Council believe are important to invest in: (1) Public safety (2) mobility, streets & sidewalks (3) drainage (4) municipal facilities and (5) an animal shelter.”
Projects are expected to be completed or under construction in the next five to seven years. A project implementation strategy is currently being developed. The city is committed to full transparency and accountability in carrying out approved bond projects.
