From the City of Sugar Land:
After more than 20 years of sitting vacant, this century-old landmark is one big step closer to a new future.
Following City Council approval, the City is moving forward with a $15 million construction contract for preservation of the Char House, preparing it for future reuse.
So, what’s in store for this iconic building?
- Structural repairs to help stabilize the building for generations to come
- A new permanent roof and historically appropriate window restoration
- Electrical, mechanical and masonry improvements
- Restoration and relocation of the iconic Imperial signage to reflect its original placement
What about the funding?
The $15 million project is part of a previously authorized $50 million certificate of obligation, funded through sales tax revenue restricted for economic development purposes, not property taxes.
Construction is expected to begin in December, with completion estimated for March 2028. This is a major milestone in the ongoing revitalization of the Imperial Historic District, which the City acquired in June 2025. There’s still work ahead, but we’re making progress toward bringing new life, activity and investment to a place that shaped Sugar Land’s history.
A historic landmark, a new chapter and plenty of potential for what comes next.
