Serve City Government through service on Boards or Commissions.

From the City of Sugar Land:

Sugar Land is looking for volunteers interested in giving their time, energy and expertise to serve as members on the Animal Advisory Board, Building Standards Commission, Independent Ethics Review Board, Planning and Zoning Commission or the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Applications will open on Friday, Sept. 4 and must be submitted electronically by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 through the Serve Sugar Land website at https://volunteer.sugarlandtx.gov/.

The groups provide valuable insight and advice on various issues and events.

The Animal Advisory Board reviews and recommends procedures for the care and maintenance of animal shelter facilities and impounded animals to ensure compliance with state law; and periodically reviews the city animal control ordinances and makes recommendations for revisions.

The Building Standards Commission is comprised of members who have knowledge of the property maintenance codes and are qualified by experience and training to decide matters related to building construction and property maintenance. Activities of the commission are limited to those authorities granted by state statute.

The Independent Ethics Review Board reviews alleged violations to the Rules of Ethical Conduct, applying to city officials such as City Council members and appointed board members.

The Planning and Zoning Commission makes recommendations to City Council concerning the use of land and other planning functions pursuant to state law and to promote orderly development; serves in an advisory role concerning master plans and changes to the zoning plan while protecting the general welfare and interest of the people concerning physical changes in the city and in the extraterritorial jurisdiction.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment hears and decides appeals on administrative decisions on the interpretation and application of the city’s zoning ordinance and requests for special exceptions and variances from the city’s zoning ordinance.

Boards and commissions are essential to the operation of city government.  Service can be a rewarding and hands-on experience.
